Windows 7 : Configuration Manager Remote Control Viewer Disconnects, locking remote host

Aug 14, 2017 | | Say something

Issue:

We have a couple of Windows 7 lift computers that are connected to a wireless network. We have been monitoring these lift computers using Configuration Manager remote control viewer to ensure that these displays are always actively displaying content. We have noticed that these displays keep on locking out and revert to the Window s7 logon screen.

On investigation, going through the C:\Windows\ccm\logs\CmRcService.log, I found that the error below and it seems that the network connection is being interrupted and then the computer locks.

Explanation:

So you would think that your laptop does not lock whenever you are disconnected from the network (fixed or wireless) so why would this happen in this instance? Well to answer that question, it is a built in security feature from Windows, and works as per design.

When you are actively using the Configuration Manager remote control viewer to remote control a computer on any network and the network loses connectivity during the active remote session, Windows will automatically lock the remote host session to prevent any unauthorized access to the computer. So in this case, the computers being installed in lifts and on a wireless connection, there were times when the network connection was not that great and caused computers to lock out.

Suggested solution would be to not monitor the computers 24×7 with Configuration Manager remote control viewer and only use the Configuration Manager remote control viewer to resolve issues remotely.
